"Tony" Norbert Anthony Steinhardt, Jr. (Ret. Col. U.S. Army) Obituary (1943

Madison, Indiana lost a beloved civic leader, dedicated serviceman and cherished family man with the passing of Colonel Norbert Anthony "Tony" Steinhardt Jr., age 81, on January 1, 2025 at 2:19 a.m. at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on February 13, 1943 in Madison, Indiana to Norbert Anthony Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Glauber Steinhardt, Tony's life was one of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his hometown. A proud graduate of Madison Consolidated High School's Class of 1961, Tony pursued further education at Vincennes University and the Army National Guard Command School. His early years were marked by industriousness, working at Steinhardt and Hanson Office Supply Store. On December 29, 1965, Tony married the love of his life, Phyllis Jo DeVeary, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Madison, forging a 59-year union blessed with two sons, Norbert Anthony III and Scott Andrew. Tony's 34-year military career with the U.S. Army National Guard, culminating in the rank of Colonel, exemplified his commitment to service. Upon his retirement, he was presented with the Legion of Merit and the Indiana Distinguished Service Medal, two of the highest awards a soldier can receive in peacetime. The governor's office also presented Tony with the Hoosier Hero Award and Sagamore of the Wabash accolade. Also during his military career, he received the Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserved Components Achievement Medal (six times), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (three times), National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three times), Indiana Military Volunteer Emblem, Indiana Commendation Medal (four times), Indiana Distinguished Service Medal, Indiana Long Service Medal, Indiana Emergency Service Ribbon and federal and state overseas ribbons. Beyond his military accomplishments, Tony was an entrepreneurial force, founding Steinhardt Heating and Cooling in 1977 and acquiring Serv-Pro Franchise in 2023. Tony's passion for community extended into countless civic endeavors. He served as president of the Madison Rotary Club, Madison Area Chamber of Commerce, Madison Jaycees and the Madison Regatta. He was the incorporating president in 1970 of Miss Madison, Inc. and served the racing team until 2023. His legacy includes managing the 1971 Gold Cup-winning Miss Madison race team which was later turned into a motion picture movie, "MADISON", for which he served as the technical advisor. His deep civic engagement included roles with the Veteran's Council, Boy Scouts of America, Jefferson County Historical Society, Exalted Ruler of Madison Elks No. 524, and Knights of Columbus No. 916, where he was a 4th Degree Faithful Navigator. For decades, he loved to share his love of Lionel toy trains with the community during the Christmas candlelight tours. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, exemplified through active membership in Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He was honored with the Community Service Award by the Chamber of Commerce in 2003 and in 2024 the City of Madison honored Tony with the prestigious Jon Menke Award, a fitting tribute to his decades of tireless devotion to our nation and the community. Tony will be remembered as a dedicated leader, mentor, and friend whose love for Madison and its people left an indelible mark. He will be remembered by a grateful community inspired by his service. He was preceded in death by his father, Norbert Anthony Steinhardt, Sr., died October 7, 1994, his mother, Anna Elizabeth Glauber Steinhardt, died August 21, 1998 and his father in law, Emmett C. DeVeary, died July 28, 1990. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIALFuneral mass will be conducted on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., by Father Christopher A. Craig at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. 413 East Second Street in downtown Madison, Indiana.
