Let Us Pause To Honor the Memory of
Mrs. Sylvia E. Spear Traylor
Mrs. Sylvia E. Spear Traylor, age 94, of Hanover, Indiana and formerly of Chesterfield, Indiana, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 1:25 p.m. at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana. It has been said that life is not measured in years but in deeds. However, there is an exception to every rule and the life of Sylvia E. Traylor is just that. After nine plus decades of life, where she helped others in many different capacities from infants to the elderly with a desire to give without personal accolade, she has gone to be with the Lord. Sylvia was the oldest of five children born at home on July 8, 1922 to Hugh E. and Della G. Key Spear in Burkesville, Kentucky. Her siblings were Juanita Spear Janes Cook, Mayford Spear, Mildred Spear Brammer and Alton Spear. After graduating from Cumberland County High School in Burkesville Sylvia then attended Lindsey Wilson College, where she also earned a letter in volleyball, she went on to become a school teacher. Her first role was in a one-room school house in Kentucky. She later taught in more traditional schools where her passion of teaching children to learn and meet the challenges of life head-on in a positive manner were instilled in hundreds of children. She married Joe P. Traylor in 1945 and this happy union of fifty nine years was blessed with four sons, Eddie, JD, Gary, and Allen. In addition to her children, there are 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren who she has been able to enjoy tremendously from their lives. Sylvia's husband of 59 years passed away too soon and she has missed him dearly since. Their early years of marriage involved many moves and various states as the family grew and jobs changed. Ultimately, the family moved to Chesterfield, Indiana where she lived from 1960 until late 2015 and was a member of Chesterfield Christian Church before moving to Hanover, Indiana into an assisted living facility. After moving to Hanover she attended her son's church, Hanover Baptist. Chesterfield quickly became home and she was involved with church, schools, scouting and a growing family - always looking to give and help others. One of the joys of her life was being an award winning Avon lady and meeting so many wonderful people through that association, others interests were quilting, shuffleboard, Rook, dominos and playing Pollyanna. After Joe retired from Guide Lamp Division of General Motors they became winter Texans and spent 20 years enjoying the warm winters down south. Even with retirement, they continued to volunteer in the schools and churches and sought out others in need of a helping hand. This was the fabric she was made of and continued even after his passing and worked in the local food pantry and helped in other capacities into her 90s. Her devotion to family and others will never be forgotten. We love you so much Mom and are what we are because of you - Eddie, JD, Gary, Allen and our families.
