Robert M. Kring

–

Madison, Indiana

Robert M. Kring, Sr. was born on July 29, 1930 to Charles and Mary Kring in Cropper, Kentucky. He graduated from Carroll County High School in 1948, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in July, 1953. During this time he was united in marriage with Dorothy Riley on August 2, 1951, recently celebrating their 63rd anniversary. To this union was born four sons, Donald, James (Tony), Robert, Jr. and Dennis and one daughter, Sharon. He returned to Ghent, Ky. and worked at the Charlestown Powder Plant before managing the Welcome Inn Restaurant, located in Ghent. In 1955, the family located to Madison where Bob worked for Thompson-Glass Dairy and Datillo's Fruit Market before going into business with Don Joslin operating their own produce business. In 1969, he became the Midwest Scouting Supervisor for the Pittsburg Pirates, a position he held until 1976. During this time he was responsible for the Midwest territory consisting of parts of five states. He then worked for Madison Consolidated Schools as a bus driver for twenty years, and also worked for the Madison Parks Department, where he could be seen at various ball fields and gyms doing what he loved best - watching games and working with kids. Known to many as Mr. Baseball or Mr. Fungo, this love of kids and baseball was evident in the many hours he spent coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion teams, as well as assisting with Madison Consolidated and Shawe Memorial baseball. A devout Christian, Bob was a member of the North Madison Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday School; his curriculum consisted of a bible and a tattered notebook of bible verses and comments. Robert died on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 12:00 p.m. at his residence in Madison, Indiana.
