Phyllis J. Gwinn Bircher

Mrs. Phyllis J. Gwinn Bircher, age 87, of Madison, Indiana entered this life on May 17, 1924 in Middletown, Indiana. She was the loving daughter of the late, Dr. G.S. & Eva Ritchie Gwinn. She was raised in Middletown until the age of eight, then her family traveled for several years settling in Madison in 1936. She was a 1942 graduate of Madison High School and from Hanover College in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology. While at Hanover College she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. Phyllis was united in marriage on October 17, 1948 to Gerard A. Bircher. This happy union was blessed with two daughters. She began a career in social work in 1947 with the Jefferson County Welfare Department until 1963. She had co-owned with her late husband Bircher Volkswagen, Bircher Subaru, Yamaha of Madison & Honda of Madison, which she managed until 1981. She was a member of the First Christian Church since 1937, Past Worthy Matron of the Madison Chapter Order of Eastern Star No. 530 (now Hanover Chapter No. 525), Beta Chapter of Tri Kappa & the Emma Scott Circle of King's Daughters'. She enjoyed NASCAR, especially drivers, Kyle Busch, Michael Waltrip & Jeff Gordon. In her spare time she enjoyed working word search puzzles, playing Nintendo, socializing with friends, & her dog, Peanut (aka, Tiny Boy). She was a devoted wife, mother & grandmother. Phyllis died Monday, August 15, 2011 at 12:27 a.m. at the Jewell House in Madison, Indiana. A LOVING FAMILY Phyllis will be missed by her loving daughters: Barbara S. Bircher & her fianc e, Mike Cardwell of Madison, Indiana and Brenda K. Wilson & her Significant Other, Mr. Kelly Boldery of Dupont, Indiana; her loving sister: Lucille Browne of Madison, Indiana; her loving grandchildren: Felicia Irvin & her husband, Clint; Rachel Wilson, Emily Wilson & Alex Wilson; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews & other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. G.S. Gwinn & Eva Ritchie Gwinn; her husband, Gerard A. Bircher died, April 27, 1988. FUNERAL CEREMONY Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., by the Reverend Merry Jones at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Springdale Cemetery in downtown Madison, Indiana. VISITATION Friends may call Friday from 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Jefferson County Animal Shelter, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
