Madison Police Chief Bill Tingle, (Ret.) Obituary (1930

Let Us Pause to Honor the Memory of Madison Police Chief George William "Bill" Tingle (Ret.) Police Chief Bill Tingle, age 82, of downtown Madison, Indiana entered this life on June 29, 1930 in Switzerland County, Indiana. He was the loving son of the late, Richard DeWitt and Helen Rose Goebel Tingle. He resided most all of his life in Madison and was a graduate of Central High School on Ryker's Ridge. At Central he was a basketball star during high school. He was raised in the Catholic faith at St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Madison. Bill was united in marriage to Betty Jean Jackson and this union was blessed with one son, William DeWitt Tingle. Bill began his career with Williamson Heater in Madison and later moved to the Cincinnati office and sold heating and air products there. Bill was united in marriage to Janet Brunner for several years. Bill became a city police officer for the Madison Police Department and rose through the ranks to serve as Chief of Police for eight years. Bill retired as a police officer after 31 years of service to the City of Madison. He was united in marriage to Karen Dale Griffin for several years. Bill worked as a service coordinator for the former Vail-Holt Funeral Home in downtown Madison for twelve years. Bill had last worked for the past ten years as Head of Security for Arvin Sango. Bill enjoyed storytelling, socializing and being with his many friends and family. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, watching football, basketball and baseball. His greatest enjoyment was being a great dad, loving grandpa and proud great grandpa. Bill loved to dance, watch John Wayne movies and was a very patriotic man. Bill was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1997 by Governor Paul E. Patton. He enjoyed membership in the Madison Moose Lodge No. 765 and Fraternal Order of Police "Stacks of Power Lodge" No. 128. Bill died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 5:22 p.m. at the Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. A LOVING FAMILY Bill will be missed by his devoted son: William DeWitt Tingle of Madison, Indiana; his fiancee, Lola Bird-Williams of Madison, Indiana; his grandchildren: Nicholas Eugene Tingle of Madison, Indiana, Laura Jean Tingle of Wabash, Indiana, Cindy Marie Murray and her husband, Jeremy of Madison, Indiana, Yaroslava Tingle of Hanover, Indiana, William DeWitt Tingle Jr., II of Madison, Indiana; his great grandchildren: Trinity Nicole Tingle, Cameron Tingle; his sister: Marjorie Mae Adams of Madison, Indiana; his brother: John Tingle of Madison, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard DeWitt and Helen Rose Goebel Tingle; his companion, Betty Stout. FUNERAL CEREMONY Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., by Chaplain, J.D. Traylor at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Springdale Cemetery in downtown Madison, Indiana. VISITATION Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE SERVICE Fraternal Order of Police Service will be conducted on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. FINAL SALUTE A Final Salute will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion. MILITARY HONORS Full Military Honors will be conducted at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion.
