Let Us Pause To Honor the Memory of Mr. Howard Jackson Montgomery Jr., "GBG" Mr. Howard Jackson Montgomery, Jr. "GBG", age 65 of Deputy, Indiana, was born on December 24, 1956 in Scottsburg, Indiana. He was the son of the late Howard Jackson, Sr. and Elsie Marie Grider Montgomery. Howard graduated from Scottsburg High School then joined the United States Army on August 14, 1975 in Louisville, Kentucky. He served in Germany for three years as Sergeant in Company A, 197th SPT. Battalion. Howard earned the Expert Qualification Badge (M-16) and the Driver and Mechanic Badge before being honorably discharged and transferred to the Reserves in Fort Benning, Georgia on August 13, 1979. On June 15, 1989, he was united in marriage at the Pisgah United Methodist Church in Deputy, Indiana to Diane Cheryl Lanz. He was employed at Freudenberg-NOK in Scottsburg, Indiana for 20 years where he took great pride in his AIM Department. He cut a huge Christmas tree each year for his employees to decorate and would buy a bicycle for one lucky child each year that the company donated to the United Way. He became interested in 12 gauge still board competition (turkey shoots) over 40 years ago and frequently shot at the Coonhunters Conservation Club in New Albany. He eventually turned this hobby into a business known as GBG, the Gun Barrel Guy in Deputy, Indiana for over 20 years until he was physically unable to continue. He built and shipped custom barrels all over the country and traveled extensively to compete in countless matches through the years. His shooting friends and family were a huge part of his life and he stayed involved by phone with them to the end of his battle. His little dog Guss was his co-worker and a constant companion since 2012 and was a great comfort to Howard in his last days. He raced stock cars when he was younger and rebuilt his engine each week with the help of his Blocher friends and followed Nascar closely, rarely missing watching a race. Howard had an incredible knowledge of the outdoors and wildlife. His other interests included hunting, fishing, boating, mowing, car racing, gardening and mushroom hunting. He took pride in his nine acre farm and spent a lot of time gardening with his '58 Ford tractor. He loved talking about gardening with his friend and neighbor, Donald Baxter, who visited regularly on his golf cart before passing in January of 2022. Howard stood at the end of his drive to salute his fellow veteran's funeral procession as it passed on its way to the Pisgah Cemetery. Howard passed away on September 25, 2022 in his home in Deputy, Indiana surrounded by his loved ones. Walden and her husband Paul of Henryville, Indiana, Jacqueline M. Pedigo and her husband Roger of Scottsburg, Indiana; his sisters in law Linda C. Green and her husband Pat of St. Louis, Missouri, Elaine C. Miller and her husband, Keith of Muncie, Indiana and Melissa C. Lanz of Campton, New Hampshire; his cousins, aunts, nieces, nephews and friends. Howard was preceded in death by his mother Elsie Marie Grider Montgomery; his father Howard Jackson Montgomery, Sr.; his brother Lloyd E. Montgomery; his nephew, William B. Walden; his father and mother in law George T. and June Jablonsky Lanz. FUNERAL CEREMONY Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 7, 2022, at 2:00 pm, by Roger Pedigo at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Private family interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana immediately following the funeral ceremony where a final salute with military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. VISITATION Friends may visit Friday from 12:00 p.m. - until the time of service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
