Helyn Hamilton Bishop Obituary (1991

Mrs. Bishop was a lifetime resident of Canaan, she was the daughter of Arnold and Hallie Neal Hamilton. An educator and administrator, she graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelor's Degree in 1963, she graduated from Indiana University (Bloomington) with a Master's Degree in 1967. She received her Principal's License from Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1974, and additional graduate study at Indiana, Purdue and Ball State Universities. She was awarded the Golden Key of Alpha Delta Kappa for scholastic achievement from Indiana University. Her biography is included in two biographical editions in the Library of Congress. "The Directory of Distinguished Americans" and "Personalities of the West and Midwest". She began her professional career at Southwestern Elementary School at Hanover, Indiana. She later taught at Ryker's Ridge Elementary for several years before accepting a position as principal at Canaan Elementary School in Canaan, Indiana. She was always active in the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school. She had enjoyed helping and serving with all community events. She was co-founder of the Canaan Restoration Council, a member of the original board of directors that organized the Canaan Water Company, served as business manager and parade chairman of the Canaan Fall Festival, since it was organized. She was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canaan Cemetery Association for several years. She had served as treasurer for the Jefferson County Retired Teachers' Association for several years. Mrs. Bishop held membership with Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Delta Kappa, Indiana Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals, Hanover College Alumni Association, Indiana University Alumni Association, Indiana Retired Teachers' Association, Jefferson County Retired Teachers' Association, Canaan Restoration Council, Historic Madison, INC., the Jefferson County Historical Society, the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church and the Canaan Cemetery Association. Mrs. Bishop passed from this life on Friday, July 3, 2009 at 5:50 pm at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, Indiana. SURVIVORS Mrs. Bishop will be missed by her daughter: Betty Bishop Copeland of Canaan, Indiana; her granddaughter: Nanci Copeland Liles & her husband: Joe of Canaan, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, & other relatives. Mrs. Bishop was preceded in death by her parents: Arnold & Hallie Neal Hamilton; her husband: Alois Bishop died: October 4, 1991; her son in law: LaVant Copeland died in December 7, 1993; her brothers: Clifford, Less & Press Hamilton; her infant sister: Louise Cathryn Hamilton. CELEBRATION OF LIFE Mrs. Bishop's life will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 7:00 pm , by: the Reverend Darrell James at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Public graveside ceremony will be conducted on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Canaan Cemetery in Canaan, Indiana. VISITATION Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.
