Gertrude Kay "Gertie" Gray Obituary (1914

Mrs. Gertrude "Gertie" Kay Gray, age 94, of Hanover, Indiana, entered this life on December 25, 1914 in Jefferson County, Indiana, the daughter of Walter & Maggie Ray Kay, both of whom preceded her in death. She was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1932 graduate of Deputy High School. She was united in marriage on October 22, 1946 at the Kent United Methodist Parsonage to William Alta Gray. This happy union was blessed with two daughters. She was a farm wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed painting, cooking delicious meals and sharing her recipes. She also had a talent for quilting, loved to travel and go on bus trips. She loved people and enjoyed socializing. She never missed a community festival if possible. She co-owned with her late husband the Freezer Fresh in Hanover for twelve years. She was a lifetime honorary member of the Madison Art Club; she was a flagship member of the Hanover Road Runners Senior Citizens Club; She also enjoyed her homemaker's club; and was proud to the first senior queen of the first Hanover Community Days Festival. She was a faithful member of the Hanover United Methodist Church, where she had served as treasurer and at the time of her death was the oldest living member. She was a woman of strong faith, a warm smile and a gracious hand. Gertrude died Monday, September 14, 2009 at 6:45 am at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana. A LOVING FAMILY Gertie will be missed by her loving daughters: Andrea "Andi" Buxton of Hanover, Indiana and Marjorie Bright & her husband: Marvin "Cobbie" Bright of Madison, Indiana; her grandchildren: Rodney Bright of Tampa, Florida; Julie Sparks & her husband: Gary of Madison, Indiana, Joe Buxton & his wife: Millie of Des Moines, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Holly Solas & her husband: Andy; Ryan Sparks & his wife: Christen; her great great grandchildren: Luke & Aubrey Sparks; & Parker Solas; her step great grandchildren: Barry Phelps & his wife: Natalie; Jim Phelps & his wife: Gerri ; & Brett Phelps & his wife: Anna; her step great great grandchildren: Justin, Nick, Zach, Alec, Taylor, Bryce & Brenna Phelps; numerous nieces, nephews & other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents: Walter & Maggie Ray Kay; her husband: William Alta "Bill" Gray died: Nov. 28, 1986; her son in law: Gerald Buxton died: Feb. 29, 2000; her sisters: Naomi & Ruth Kay, Lucy Miller & Mary Alice Cline; her brother: Chester Kay. FUNERAL CEREMONY Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 am, by the Rev. Vickie Perkins, at the Hanover United Methodist Church, 220 East LaGrange Road in Hanover, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Pisgah Cemetery in Deputy, Indiana. VISITATION Friends may call Thursday from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana and Friday from 10:00 am until time of the service at the Hanover United Methodist Church 220 East LaGrange Road in Hanover, Indiana.
