Dr. Francis W. Hare, Jr. Obituary (1917

Dr. Francis "Frank" W. Hare, Jr., 95, of Madison, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at his residence. He was born December 20, 1917 in Monroeville, Alabama, the son of Francis W. and Mary Ellen Stallworth Hare. He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a 1944 graduate of Duke University School of Medicine. He was always grateful to the U.S. Army for drafting him during World War II and providing the balance of his (and all other) medical school students' education. He served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corp from 1945-47. After several years of fellowships and residencies, in 1952 he joined the Madison Clinic and the staff of King's Daughters' Hospital to practice internal medicine. As he told the story, his wife, Marjorie Cornell Hare, stayed in Boston with a newborn while he interviewed for medical positions around the country. When he drove down Michigan Road hill and saw downtown Madison, he knew that he wanted to settle here and practice medicine. With the help of the KDH staff, he started a department to provide electro-, echo-, and exercise cardiography, the Intensive Care Unit, and the practice of cardioversion. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the College of Cardiology, and was president of the Indiana Chapter of the College of Physicians. He published articles in state and national medical journals. Dr. Hare loved the practice of medicine, caring for patients and was a true "southern gentleman" in the respect he extended to all. In retirement, he had time for reading, gardening, family, travel, and volunteering at Historic Madison's Dr. Hutchings Museum. He always had time for ice cream. He was a faithful and loyal member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving on many committees and teaching Sunday school for many years. SURVIVORS Dr. Hare is survived by his 101-year old brother, Nicholas Hare of Monroeville, Alabama, two sons, Dwight Hare (Stephanie Bergsma) of Del Mar, CA, and Richard Hare of Madison; three daughters Sara Hare, of Madison, Marjorie (Bonnie) Hare (Richard Ice) of Madison and Mary Sutton Roberts (Tom Roberts) of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren, Jason Brogan, Raney Brogan Williams, Gage Brogan, Kristyn Hare Bachmann, Gabriel Hare, Joshua Hare, Rebecca Sutton, and Amy Sutton; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marjorie Cornell Hare whom he married June 2, 1951, and who died October 25, 1992. CELEBRATION OF LIFE CEREMONY Celebration of life services will be conducted Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., by the Rev. Dennis Ingle at the Trinity United Methodist Church, on Broadway in downtown Madison, Indiana. His body was donated to the University of Louisville Medical School. VISITATION Friends may call Friday, January 25, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until time of the service all at the Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Madison, Indiana. MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS Memorial contributions may be made to Historic Madison, Inc. or the Marjorie Cornell Hare Nursing Scholarship through the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County.
