David Lamar Childress

–

Madison, Indiana

Dave was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 to Lamar and Helen Schultz Childress. Dave graduated from Anaheim High School in 1962 and enjoyed playing on the high school football team, surfing in the nearby ocean, and hiking in the mountains. He served in the United States Army with tours of duty in Viet Nam, Turkey, and Taiwan from 1963-1967. When he was 26 years old, he made a radical life-changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord-and then to become Christ's disciple. This brought him great joy and a major transformation to his lifestyle. He began preparing for serving the Lord by attending and graduating from Biola College, and then earned his masters degree from Talbot Seminary, just outside Los Angeles. During a summer while in college, he traveled to minister to Native Americans in British Columbia, Canada. There he met another summer volunteer worker, Ann Phillips, from Indiana. They married the following year and returned additional summers to serve in BC. Later they became the parents of three children: Lydia, Susanna, and Micah. Following seminary, Dave and his young family served with O.C. Ministries in the Philippines, where he was involved in evangelism, as well as discipling and training local pastors. Some years later, he was critically injured in an accident there; because of the seriousness of the resulting injuries, he and his family had to return to residency in the U.S. Dave and his family then settled in southern IN, where he pastored local churches. He served on the Southwestern School Board and coached his children's softball, baseball, and basketball teams. In the 1990s he created and produced the local radio programs "Silverwing" and "Solid Rock", sharing his love of Christ through music and Scripture. In the years prior to his retirement, he served in the Madison Schools as an English as a Second Language teacher k-12, where he enjoyed working with international students. One of his great joys was being a husband, parent and grandparent. Despite many difficult health issues, his later years were spent delighting in his ten beloved grandchildren, with devoted efforts to developing elaborate slip'n slides and legendary firework displays, in addition to joyful worship songs. He was active in Cornerstone Community Fellowship and thankful for any opportunities to minister to others for the Lord (even while he was a hospital patient). At home with his wife and three children by his side, he went to be with his beloved Savior on January 22, 2021 at the age of 76.
