Brother Joni J. Schrock Obituary (1945

Joni J. Schrock, age 78 of Elida, Ohio, was born August 12, 1945 in Lagrange, Indiana. He was the only son of the late Jacob A. and Amanda (Beechy) Schrock. He attended Millersburg High School, and was united in marriage to Sara Ellen Miller on September 12, 1969, at Bethel Mennonite Church in Nappanee, IN. This happy union of nearly 55 years was blessed with four children: Juanita, Marla, Curtis, and Shirley. Following a 13-year battle with multiple myeloma, Joni passed peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 8:22 p.m. at his home in Elida, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Joni was a skilled electrician, carpenter, and woodworker. For many years, he owned Custom Craft of Madison, Indiana, serving as a contractor offering a wide range of services, including new construction, remodeling, and custom woodworking. For a short time, he co-owned Madison Kitchen and Bath along with his son, Curtis. After Joni and Sara moved to Elida, Ohio, to be near their daughter, Joni worked as a salesman for Heritage Furniture. In October of 1976, Joni and Sara moved to southern Indiana, to start a mission church -- Canaan Mennonite Chapel in Canaan, Indiana. He served as pastor of this congregation from1999-2014. He enjoyed playing the guitar, spending time with family and friends, and, above all, sharing the love of God. He also helped to found LAMP Ministries, an organization that holds teaching conferences and seeks to help the Liberian people provide for themselves. After relocating to Ohio, they became members of Sharon Mennonite Church, where they found a loving, supportive body of believers. Brother Joni will be greatly missed by his loving wife of nearly 55 years, Sara (Miller) Schrock of Elida, Ohio; his loving son, Curtis, and his wife, Barbara of Traverse City, Michigan; his loving daughters, Juanita Hartman and husband, Daniel, of Traverse City, Michigan, Marla Bear of Elida, Ohio, and husband, Arlyn, of Woodburn, Indiana; Shirley Miller and her husband, Jasper, of Madison, Indiana; his grandchildren: Brandon, Tanya, Keith, Miranda, Anson, Lucinda, Angela, Alesha, Valerie, Natalie, Jaden, Jolinda, Shawna, Tyler, and Shelby; 1 great-grandchild, Nico; his three sisters, Susie Ellen Schrock of Arcola, Illinois; Emma Mae Plank of Tuscola, Illinois; LeAnna Herschberger and husband, Samuel, of Topeka, Indiana; his brother-in-law, Lyle Miller, and wife, Ada, of Nappanee, Indiana; his sisters-in-law, Katie Bontrager and husband, Glen, of Bremen, Indiana; Ina Slabaugh and husband, Dale, of Nappanee, Indiana; and Maria Bacher and husband, Vernon, of Seneca, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob A. Schrock; his mother, Amanda (Beechy) Schrock, his maternal grandparents, Henry A. Beechy and Emma (Bontrager) (Beechy) Yoder, and step-grandfather, Martin Yoder; his paternal grandparents, Abraham D. and Rebecca (Yoder) Schrock; his father- in-law and mother-in-law, Homer D. and Linda Mae (Miller) Miller.
