Arthur "Pops" L. Gentry Obituary (1935

Let Us Pause To Honor the Memory of Mr. Arthur L. "Pops" Gentry Mr. Arthur L. "Pops" Gentry, age 83, of Madison, Indiana formerly of Hanover entered this life on March 10, 1935 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was the loving son of the late Paul S. and Elizabeth Furlong Gentry. He was raised in Kentucky and had resided in Jefferson County since 1976. He graduated high school from Bowling Green and was inducted into the United State Air Force on March 19, 1957 in Nashville, Tennessee. He served in the 4756 Transportation Squadron and rose to the rank of Airman Second Class at Tindall Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1961 from Tindall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida receiving the Good Conduct Medal. He remained in the Reserves and was discharged on March 18, 1963. He was a proud 50 plus year member of Local 181 International Union of Operating Engineers. He strived to learn how to operate every piece of equipment on each job site he worked at. He spent many years helping to construct state roads and interstate highways. Arthur was a heavy equipment operator most of his working career having worked at the Marble Hill Nuclear Site near Hanover. After Marble Hill site closed he remained working there an additional eight years helping to disassemble much of the plant that had been built. Many of the workers had stated he was one of the best operators that Marble Hill had ever moved to the plant site in 1974. On June 25, 1982 he was united in marriage to Ruth L. Turner Sizemore in Madison at the Jefferson County Courthouse. Art took her children as his own and enjoyed being their Pops as well as the grandchildren's Poppy. After his retirement he enjoyed "RVing" with his wife around the United States often convoying with his brother and sister in law. Arthur held membership in Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion and was a faithful member of the Hanover Baptist Church in Hanover, Indiana. Art was proud that he was able to volunteer at the church and go out and help to construct other churches and transport members to their various doctors appointments. He loved his dog and being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Art will be remembered as gentle natured man who always had a smile on his face. He was quick witted, loved to laugh, joke and had a great sense of humor. Arthur died on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 8:45 p.m. at his home in Madison, Indiana. Turner Gentry of Madison, Indiana; his daughter, Debbie Burnham and her husband, Alan of Madison, Indiana; his sons, Ron Sizemore of Madison, Indiana, Tony Sizemore and his fiancee, Lu Bright of Hanover, Indiana, Daryl Sizemore and his wife, Kathy of Madison, Indiana, Rob Sizemore of Carrollton, kentucky; his grandchildren, Kylee and Katrina Hart, Bennan Jump, Tia, Gretchen, Dalton, Hilary and Ethan Sizemore; his step grandchildren, Kyle and Kristen Schmalz; James, David and Brent Burnham; his great grandchildren: Cora, Harlan, Amora, Maylee, Coen, Porter, Jubilee, Noah and Atreyu; his brother, Harold Gentry and his wife, Barbara of Somerville, Alabama; his sister, Patsy Wilhite and her husband, Joe of Bowling Green, Kentucky; he loved and maintained a bond with his former daughter in laws: Joanna Bruner of Madison, Indiana and Cindy Thomas Sizemore of Jeffersonville, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul S. Gentry, his mother, Elizabeth Furlong Gentry, his brother, James Gentry and his wife, Anita, and his sister, Margaret McCullar and her husband, Lt. Col. Mac. FUNERAL CEREMONY Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., by Pastor J.D. Traylor at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana. VISITATION Friends may call Saturday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until time of the service at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana.MILITARY HONORSA final salute will be conducted on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion and the United States Air Force Ceremonial Unit with full military honors to follow at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana.MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS Memorial contributions may be made to the Hanover Baptist Church.
