Madison, Indiana
Amber Jean Birchfield Miller was born on August 10, 1951 in Madison, Indiana. She was the daughter of Floyd and Helen Birchfield. She was a 1971 graduate of MCHS where she met her future husband, Kenny Miller, in 1970 though they did not begin dating until September of 1972. Their relationship blossomed and they were married on her 22nd birthday in 1973. They left on a motorcycle honeymoon traveling first to Opryland, then to the Smoky Mountains, and then up the Blue Ridge Parkway. They were blessed with a daughter, Connie Sue, in Nov. 1974, and a second daughter, Cassondra Lynn, in Dec. 1979. Amber worked at KDH until she was several months pregnant with Connie. After Cassy was in grade school she began volunteering at the Girls Club and later was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She later worked at DSI helping disabled children, a job that she found very rewarding. She also volunteered at Canaan Elementary School and helped tutor children, decorate, and later served as President of the Canaan PTO. When Connie began playing summer softball Amber and her parents, Mimi and Papaw Birchfield, were always there rooting for Connie and her team. Connie continued playing softball and was on the varsity team in high school with her mom supporting vocally and in every other way she could. Cassy was in the drama club in high school and also participated in the marching band. Her mom was always there attending plays, and becoming a band parent and traveling to marching band contests. Amber loved working jig saw puzzles, preferably 1,000 and 1,500 piece puzzles which she could assemble quite quickly amazing her husband who had/has absolutely no talent in puzzles. She was given a 1,000 piece puzzle in which all the pieces were shaped like lizards, no problem! She was an animal lover all her life. Once when she was small her doggie disappeared and she wouldn't eat until after it was found. There are many pictures of her cuddling puppies and kitties very often all snuggled up around her with everyone sleeping contentedly. When Connie got a horse her mother was a bit nervous at first but later found great enjoyment of giving tasty treats to the horse. The family enjoyed traveling with many tent camping trips in various states and parks. In 1982 they traveled and camped in Canada which was a great adventure. Ken began building race car engines and joined a club. Amber also joined and Ken was elected President, Amber as Secretary, and both girls worked as scorers. They traveled to many places for events, met many people, and endured long late night drives back home. When the girls were grown Ken and Amber started traveling by motorcycle again. They particularly loved riding in the mountains. Later the grandchildren started arriving and grandma was delighted and devoted to them as with her own. Then the great grandchildren began arriving and now she went from Grandma to Nana. The little people really love their Nana. She has attended Macedonia Baptist Church since the late 1970's and was a member of the WMS and had served as President in that organization as well. Around ten years ago she began having health problems. She and Ken battled and defeated cancer three times. The fourth battle began in March of this year. She told a friend that she was tired but she continued to fight so that Ken wouldn't feel that he hadn't done everything he could for her. She passed away at her home on Thursday, September 17th, with her husband of 53 years, Ken, at her side.
Amber will be missed by her loving husband of 53 years Kenny Miller of Madison, Indiana; her daughters Connie Sue Voris (Michael) of Versailles, Indiana, Cassondra Lynn Friars (A.J.) of Greencastle, Indiana; her adopted daughter Loretta Thompson of Seymour, Indiana; her grandchildren Brady Voris, Deanna Voris (Yousif Anees), Nicholas Voris, Adam Voris and Lauren Friars Moore (Jeremy); her great-granchildren Cason, Oliver, Rayden, Irys, Isybelle, Remmington and Priscilla; her sister Scherry Sullivan (Jim) of Madison, Indiana; her sister-in-law Susan Miller of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; her several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and other relatives.
