A Challenge for a Cause
Sunday, August 31, 2008 - Louisville, KY Support Team Risk - In honor of Dianna K. Risk and help us raise money for the Madison Junior High School Peer Counseling Endowment
On August 31, 2008, 2,100 athletes will participate in the world's most challenging endurance event - the Ironman. While this incredible journey takes athletes on a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run, it also demonstrates the passion, courage, and determination that all Ironman athletes embody. As if our family and a very busy career aren't enough; this past winter I, JOHN SCHUTTE, decided to take the challenge of the Ford Ironman and will compete in Louisville this summer as 1 of the 2,100 professional and amateur athletes.
Triathletes train an average of seven months to prepare for the Ironman. They spend an average of 18-24 hours per week swimming, biking, and running in preparation. Like Ashley, you could be thinking, “who in their right mind would be crazy enough to do that?” Well, we are all hooked one way or another! Our summer vacations have turned into family weekends where we travel to great venues where I compete in triathlons and Ashley and Carter are there to cheer me on. It is something we can do together as a family while promoting a healthy, active lifestyle.
The Team Risk inspiration: Dianna’s Camp Win-Win is an innovative summer training program for 35 to 40 eighth graders, who are chosen by their classmates. They are provided training and skill building opportunities in the areas of self-esteem, assertiveness, communication, bully prevention, and healthy alternatives to drug use. These experiences prepare and develop them as student leaders and together they make up the Peer Counselor Program. As Peer Counselors, they are responsible for the safety and monitoring of the activities for the entire student body during the school year and they create relationships that go outside of the boundaries of calendar and school grounds. Also known as Bully Busters, these student leaders are effective advocates for the education and prevention of violence and drugs in their school and community. Mrs. Risk trained more than 300 students since she began the program eight years ago.
An academic Ironman in her own right, Dianna Risk exercised her passion and energy daily to inspire young adults to do things beyond what they thought was outside of their personal limits. Through her tremendous spirit and dedication to the youth of Jefferson County, the Madison Consolidated School System has been left a better, safer place.
You can learn more about Dianna Risk and the impact she had on our commitment by visiting www.morgan-nay.com/obit.aspx?id=212 where we have shared her legacy. We are so proud to have the opportunity to share her story outside of our community, and we urge you to pass this along to your friends and family to help us support a great cause.
